| The GATS 2024 Election Committee thanks all volunteers who made it possible for the elections to be conducted with ease and integrity, and every member who participated in the democratic exercise to deliver their verdict for the community. We are proud that the online voting platform we used, Election Buddy, made it possible for us to empower every one of the eligible GATS voters to access the results instantly, by a mere click of their own unique ballot link, right after the polls were closed at 10:00 PM on 12/21/2024. For the benefit of the larger community, including all GATS members and supporters, we present the results here. |

| As we appreciate all voters for providing their choice answers to the 2 referendum questions included on the ballot, we would like to provide the following clarifications, especially to those who are confused, troubled, and in need of them. The GATS 2024 Election Committee recognizes that it has the responsibility as well as authority to act independently, and that everything done to ensure the orderly conduct of elections and referendums in the interest of GATS is official as per our By-Laws. It is good to remember that, just as each of you have the member’s power to elect the officials to be at your service, you do have the power and responsibility to provide them the needed guidance on how you would like your organization to be run as well. We did not want to miss the opportunity, at this most opportune time of online elections, to seek your opinions on key issues affecting GATS that can serve both as guidance and a firm reminder. Hence, given the recent history of tumults in GATS, keeping the long-term interests of the GATS community, we responsibly used our independent authority to include the survey questions to get valuable input and guidance from the GATS General Body, always regarded as the most powerful entity in GATS. Let us humbly remind you that your power comes with the responsibility to be educated about the events that affect the health and impact the future of GATS. We are barely 3 weeks short of 3 years since GATS successfully defeated, at a painfully great expense, the baseless lawsuit filed against it by 7 individuals supported by scores of others in an attempt to institute lawlessness. History, and the lessons of the past, should not be forgotten if we want to grow GATS securely for our future generations. If you need to learn about the lawsuit and understand its significance for the future of GATS, you need to review the relevant documents (already published in GATS newsletters), especially the Election Closeout Reports of 2020 thru 2022, as well as the Court Transcripts of the 2021 Lawsuit against GATS. GATS Elections 2024 – Important Instructions for Voting Tomorrow (Saturday, 12/21/2024)
Please remember, the election date is 12/21/2024 and the timings are from 6:00 AM until 10:00 PM.
Each eligible voter will be receiving an email at or very shortly after 6:00 AM on Saturday, December 21st, 2024, with a link to their unique electronic ballot and instructions for how to cast your ballot securely and conveniently online.

- As some of you were wondering, you WILL NOT have to login to your GATS member account for voting purposes as the election is not happening on the GATS website!!
- Each eligible voter, with their GATS membership active as of 06/30/2024, who has a unique email address in their GATS membership record, will receive a unique ballot link by email at around 6:00 AM on 12/21/2024 (Saturday), which is the voting start time. Please note the voting window is from 6:00 AM until 10:00 PM.
- The message will have a subject line of “Vote now: Greater Atlanta Tamil Sangam (GATS) – GATS Elections 2024 – LIVE“, with clear instructions.
- Your unique ballot link will look like this: https://secure.electionbuddy.com/XXXX-XXXX-XXXX-XXXX/
- You would simply CLICK that link and follow the process to make your choices and finally SUBMIT the ballot with your valuable choices!
- Until you complete and SUBMIT your ballot, you will receive up to 5 pre-scheduled email REMINDERs to vote before the deadline. The FINAL reminder email will be sent an hour before the polls close.
- In case you are not interested in voting for anyone in this election, and don’t want to be annoyed by the REMINDER emails, we humbly request that you still click the ballot link ASAP and make the ABSTAIN choice for each position and SUBMIT your ballot. GATS Elections 2024 – Call for Nominations to fill positions remaining open

Until today, the Election Committee either does not have any approved nominations yet, or did not receive any nominations at all for any of the following positions:
1. Two At-Large Director positions on the Board (3 year term; Service years 2025-2027)
2. One Treasurer position (1 year term; Service year 2025)
Hence, the Election Committee has decided to relax the requirements for the above listed open position as follows:
Two At-Large Director positions in the Board
Nominees must have
1. At least 5 years of continuous GATS membership as of April 30th, 2024.
2. Served at least 1 term in any of the Board Committees or Standing Committees
One Officer positions in the Executive Committee (Treasurer)
Nominees must have
1. Active GATS membership as of April 30th, 2024.
2. Served at least 1 term in the OC
Guidelines:
Active GATS members in good standing, as per Bylaw Section 5.2 are eligible to contest in the elections. Also refer to the GATS Member Agreement (GATS Policies & Procedures – Article 4) that all GATS members must accept and abide by.
● Any candidate(s) whose nominations were not accepted earlier for the positions still open, should write to electioncommittee@gmail.com by the new nomination filing deadline (please see below) if they intend to be reconsidered for the same position again under the relaxed rules noted above.
● An active GATS member in good standing can file a self-nomination only for a single post.
● Please refer to Article 3 of GATS Policies & Procedures document for important election related policies.

| GATS Elections 2024 -Nominations Update After the initial processing of nominations received so far, except those still under review, here is the list of approved nominees: |

GATS Elections 2024 – Rules Update Background Even before the 2021 Amendments, GATS By-Laws had the requirement of 2-years of membership for serving on the Executive Committee which applied to both the 5 Officers and 10 Members on it. In the draft produced in 2022, the GATS By-Laws Review Committee had similar language along with the cut-off date of “January 31st or the Pongal event date, whichever is later”. When the attorney, Jeff Woodward who won the lawsuit for GATS in early 2022, took over the task of redrafting the By-Laws, the 2-year requirement for Officer position was unfortunately lost because the old Executive Committee ( Members + Officers ) has now been restructured as Operations Committee ( Members in the old By-Laws ) and Executive Committee ( Officers in the old By-Laws ). Also lost was the important phrase “or the Pongal event date, whichever is later” for the membership renewal cut-off date. Experience of GATS Elections 2022, and fast forward While no one, who truly cares for the professional quality and future well-being of GATS, can dispute the fact that the true spirit and intent of the 2-year requirement for an Officer post, which is well implied through other prerequisite clauses, needs to be adhered to, there was a huge hue and cry of “injustice” raised when it was applied to a particular nomination in 2022. At the time of filing the nomination, the affected nominee believed they satisfied the 2-year rule, but the manually updated member record did not have proof of payment for the 2021 membership. This anomaly was caught earlier by the GATS 2020 Election Committee, which sent two notifications to the individual before the end of 2020 requesting to make the payment of $50 due for 2021, which was not done. After the GATS 2022 Election Committee rejected the nomination for still missing the payment for 2021, the person attempted to use the loophole of the missing 2-year requirement in the By-Laws. The 2022 Election Committee rightly stood by the clearly intended long-standing rule, which was well-meaning for GATS, and very well implied without language. The 2022 Election Closeout Report included a recommendation that all Errors and Omissions in the newly passed By-Laws be taken care of ASAP. The opportunities to do so in the years 2023 and 2024 have been very badly missed leading us to similar problems now on a much larger scale involving a group of several “affected” individuals who unfortunately see the missing By-Laws language as a boon, caring for neither the intent nor the spirit of our By-Laws in the interest of GATS. It is also to be noted that the 2023 Election Committee very simply dropped the rule, forming the basis of precedence affecting GATS in 2024 in a dejavu of a well-defended against 2022 problem unleashed on steroids. Rule Change for GATS Elections 2024 Though we are not fully convinced this is the right thing to do for GATS, we are making the following change for the 2024 Election: The condition that “2-years of continuous membership is required for an Officer position in the Executive Committee” is DROPPED. It is our sincere hope and prayer that this would be the very last time an exception like this is allowed because we are given to believe that the current awareness has resulted in a Board commitment to fix the minor Errors and Omissions like this in our By-Laws. Backstory of the rule change In our earlier newsletter, we had said the following: “When there are certain By-Laws and Policies on the books, we should respect that they are there for some good reasons and it would lead to disaster if we take the liberty, or even worse be pressured, to bend them as it suits those who don’t understand their purpose. It is also important to point out that, if at all any exceptions are made due to specific circumstances in an election cycle, they will not be carried forward in future elections since it would mean permanently breaking the By-Laws, and be very unfair to other qualified nominees in the community whom GATS is obligated to provide equal and fair opportunities to serve”. Despite the above fact, when we were approached by the GATS Board with concerns that the militant voices attacking GATS and the Election Committee are getting louder by the hour, and that we had to somehow let everyone who wanted in on the ballot so the General Body can deal with them on Election Day, for the sake of putting out the fires now, we responded that we could consider doing so on two conditions:The Board getting legal opinion on the subject from an attorney, preferably the one who helped us draft and restructure our current By-LawsThe Board giving an assurance that they would take up the By-Laws amendments recommended by the 2022 Election Committee so this would be the final year we faced such problems during elections.The GATS Board response stated that there wasn’t enough time to get a legal opinion due to non-availability of attorneys, but agreed to take up the By-Laws amendments as a priority to fix the Errors and Omissions therein. The Election Committee decides We are fully aware that yielding to the Board’s request, especially without the required legal opinion to protect GATS and its sub-structures including the Election Committee, would expose GATS to potential complaints of us compromising the Election Committee’s mandated independence, and of the Board committing election interference. Given that the GATS Board commits to amend the By-Laws as a priority, and bears the responsibility to defend the volunteers who act in good faith to serve the community , we hesitantly yielded to their request to drop the 2-year continuous membership requirement for Officer positions in the Executive Committee in the 2024 Elections. GATS Elections 2024 – Schedule Update Due to the rule update as stated above, the final election schedule has been re-worked as follows. Please note the following important dates:December 11, 2024 – Last day for Submitting Nominations with the Election Committee December 13, 2024 – Nominations withdrawal deadline December 13, 2024 – Last day for Submitting Candidate profile and agreement to the Election Committee December 15, 2024 – First GATS newsletter with approved campaign messages from candidates still contesting on ballot December 18, 2024 – Second and last GATS newsletter with approved campaign messages from candidates still contesting on ballot December 21, 2024 – Election day (if required). We have received multiple emails expressing concerns about recent GATS election-related newsletters.
Please rest assured that the Chairman and the Board are aware of the situation and are actively working on next steps to address it, including collaborating with the Election Committee and are currently awaiting their responses. We will keep you updated as soon as we have more information.
We kindly request members to refrain from posting about the election process or updates on social media. Sharing information about our Sangam, especially when referencing General Body members, may inadvertently lead to unwanted public exposure. Furthermore, any messages that harm the image and principles of GATS as well as General Body constitute a violation of the GATS bylaws.

GATS is pleased to issue this call for nominations for volunteers to serve the community in various official capacities in the year 2025.
We invite nominations for all Officer positions in the Executive Committee (EC) and for the upcoming vacancies for At-Large Directors (3-years term), serving in the Board of Directors (BOD).
Executive Committee (EC) Positions (Serving Year 2025):
